Area of rectangular garden = $length \times breadth = 40\times 30 = 1200 m^2$ 
Area of Path = 456 m²

Total area  = area of garden + area of path 
                      = 1200 +456 
                         = 1656 m²

Let the width of the path = x 
Total area  = (40+2x) (30+2x)
1656 = 1200+80x+60x+4x²
4x² + 140x -456 =0
x² +35x -114 =0
x² - 3x +38x -114 =0
x( x-3) +38 (x-3 ) = 0
(x-3) (x+38) = 0
x =3,-38 
x = -38  is not possible.

Hence  =3 m


 Therefore the width of the path  = 3m
