Q 6.
Describe with the aid of a diagram some form of a fuse which is used in the electric lighting circuit of a house. Give two reasons why a fuse must not be replaced by an ordinary copper wire.

Dear Student

iagram of fuse in electric lighting circuit of a house:

Fuse:
  • It is a device which protect the electrical appliances against high current in a circuit.
  • It is a metallic wire which has high resistance and low melting point.
  • It is connected in series to the appliance which is to be protected against over current.
  • In the case of high current, the fuse wire gets heated up to more extent due to its high resistance.
  • Then, the fuse wire melts on account of low melting point.
  • After the melting of fuse wire, the circuit becomes open and flow current ceases to protect the appliance.

We use the material for the fuse wire which have low  melting point and high specific resistance(resistivity).

Copper wire has low resistance so it allows high amount of current pass through it. But when large amount of current pass through the fuse wire, due to the heating effect wire gets break and appliances remains safe.

So we cannot use copper wire in place of fuse.
