Please explain what is carbon 12

Dear student,

Carbon-12 is an isotope of carbon that has 6 protons and 6 neutrons in its nucleus so that its mass n.o is 12.

carbon-12 is chosen as a standard for assigning the atomic masses. So atomic masses of all the elements are assigned with respect to carbon-12.

1 atomic mass unit= 1/12 th of the mass of one carbon-12 atom.

Carbon-12 is the more abundant of the two stable isotopes of carbon, amounting to 98.93% of the element carbon; its abundance is due to the triple-alpha process by which it is created in stars.
