Dear student,

1. Secularism is an idea that supports the view that a country belongs equally to all the people: people of no religion, no language, no caste, no ethnicity, no gender, no class are entitled to lay claim to the country more than any other.
2. The current status of minority religion in India is that people falling within this class are considered second-class. Their safety and well-being are dependent on the consent and will of the majority upper-class, patriarchal Hindu.
3. India's institutions need to be rebuilt: media, police, judiciary, universities, the planning process, the Election Commission of India. The constitutional pledge of secular democracy also needs to be repaired.
4. The idea of secularism was advocated by the likes of Ashoka, Akbar, Buddha, Kabir, Nanak, Gandhi, Ambedkar, Nehru and Maukan Azad in our culture.
