When the subject of the verb receives the action or is acted upon, the verb is said to be in the Passive voice. For example: The sword was made by the blacksmith. The subject of this sentence(sword) receives the action(made). Therefore, the verb is in the Passive voice.
Passive voice is used in formal writing- to write reports, log scientific experiments, make advertisements, headlines for newspapers, address a formal gathering.
