Standing on the podium holding onto my certificate and looking at the medal hanging on my neck- tears of joy streamed down. This memento was the joy of my parents and result of their hard work -yes their hard work, not mine. Born into a family where a full meal was a treat- we comprehended what it is to live each moment. When McDonalds provide happy meals for their little customers, the kids in our family wore a happy smile on the days when we could fill our belly. When the vacations were over- our tiny tv screen tempted us with the ads of new bags, shoes, umbrellas. But they failed in their attempts to please us. We carried the same bag through the years. No matter how much they struggled, our parents made sure we were educated. To the world outside, we were the children of a daily wage labourer. What good could come out of us? What intelligence did we possess? But when our parents did their part, we did our small parts too. And the result? The medal and the certificate that I am tightly holding on to. It is a degree earned by my father and mother who haven't made it to the portal of any prestigious institution. I am a doctor! And the daughter of proud parents.
