One day, a mother and her son, Ernest were sitting at the door of their cottage. They were talking about the Great Stone Face which was clearly visible in the sun. Ernest really admired the Great Stone face and the giant face kindly smiled on him. He wanted to see a man with such a face to love him dearly. The person who will bear likeness to the Great Stone Face would be the greatest and noblest person of his time. People longed for such a person. Men like Gathergold and Blood-and-Thunder tried to establish likeness to the Great stone face but Ernest failed to recognize any such likeness between these men and the Great Stone Face.
With the passage of time, Ernest became old. He met a poet whom he thought could bear likeness to the Great Stone Face. However, the poet declared himself unworthy of this likeness. Earnest used to speak to his neighbours daily, and the poet started accompanying him. The poet used to listen to his talks which made him realize that Earnest's life was far more nobler than his own poems. He declared Earnest as the likeness of the Great Stone Face and everyone agreed with him.
