The ancient mariner was an old, skinny man with a ‘glittering eye’. He had shot an innocent Albatross with his crossbow. Now, he felt cursed to be haunted indefinitely by his dead shipmates and was compelled to tell the tale of his downfall at random times. Whenever he shared his story with someone, he felt lot of pain and agony.

The Ancient mariner seems to be fearful because he is a bit unnaturally old with skinny hands,a glittering eye and a long grey beard.He holds the wedding guest's hands and forces him to listen to the tale of his downfall.
He narrates about his voyage and even admits that he killed the albatross without any provocation.He regrets a lot for it and incurs punishment for his life time as his fellow mariners had hung the dead albatross around his neck.
The hung albatross acts as a cursed reminder for him.He narrates his tale so as to decrease his torment temporarily.But he accepts that he has committed a sin and he must repent for it which states that he was simple-hearted.
