All small cubes formed from the outer faces will be coloured with at least one side painted.
However, the interior of the cube will have 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 smaller cubes that will have no inner surfaces painted.
To understand this further let us divide the cube into 6 layers. The outer layers ( layer 1 and layer 6 ) will have all the smaller cubes painted ( i.e at least one side of the smaller cubes will be painted ). The layers 2, 3, 4, 5 each will have 16 interior cubes with no painted surface. So the total number of such cubes = 16 +16 + 16 + 16 = 64. Please go through the below figure :
