There was a need to develop genetically engineered insulin because:
1. Insulin extracted from animals had sufficient antibody-producing substances which caused serious adverse reactions. Genetically engineered insulin caused fewer adverse reactions than insulin produced from animals.
2. Another advantage was from genetic engineering we could produce a large amount of insulin without killing animals.
