Please solve question 8.
Q8. (a) What is an electrical fuse ? State two characteristics of an electrical fuse.
(b) What is internal resistance of a cell ? Write two factors on which it depends.
(c) In the circuit diagram given below, a cell of 9V and internal resistance 0.5 is connected across a resistor A of 2 in series and two resistors 2 and 6 which are in parallel.
Find :
(i) the total resistance
(ii) the total current
(iii) the current in the 6 resistor
(iv) the potential difference across the terminals of the cell.
Dear student,
(a) The fuse breaks the circuit if a fault in an appliance causes too much current flow. This protects the wiring and the appliance if something goes wrong. The fuse contains a piece of wire that melts easily. If the current going through the fuse is too great, the wire heats up until it melts and breaks the circuit.

Charcteristics of a fuse are:-
- It should have low melting point.
- It should have low ohmic losses.
- It should have high conductivity. ( or low resistivity)
(b) Internal Resistance within the battery resists the current flow and causes a voltage drop when connected to a circuit.- It depends on the temperature of electrolytes, the distance between the electrodes, Area of electrodes and concentration of electrolyte.
