The main function of a flywheel in a machinery is to store energy in the form of rotational energy and provide the energy whenever required .The rotational energy of a body is given by the formula . Therefore a flywheel having more mass concentration over the periphery will have higher moment of inertia and will be able to store more energy as compared to a flywheel of same mass having more mass concentration near the centre.
