pls clarify the difference between stolons n suckers with eg....

Prostrate aerial stems, called runners or stolons are important reproduction organs in some species such as the stawberry and some ferns. A form of budding called suckering is the reproduction or regeneration a plant by shoots that arise from an existing root system. Species that characteristically produce suckers include Elm and members of the rose family.

stolon : A stolon is a specialized type of horizontal above-ground shoot, a colonizing organ that arises from an axillary bud near the base of the plant.eg: strawberry(Fragaria)

suckers :  sucker is a shoot or cane which grows from a bud at the base of a tree or shrub or from its roots.eg: Rhus spp, Prunus,Embothrium species.

Stolon is an epigeal branch that bents down, touch soil and produce adventitious roots developing into a new plant, if separated from parent plant. e.g.,Nerium, Rosa.

Sucker is an hypogeal branch, grow obliquely upward, produce adventitious roots and become new independent plant, if separated. e.g.,Chrysanthemum, Mentha.

In stolon, the branch grows aerially for some distance and then arc downwards to touch the ground where it develops adventitious roots and leaves.e.g., mint, strawberry.

In sucker the branch grows horizontally underground from the root of a plant and then obliquey upwards thus producing a new plant.e.g., banana, pineapple.

Both are sub-aerial stem modifications.

Stolons are sub aerial stem develop from the lower branch of stem, they grow obliquely downwards, when these branch touch the soil, they produce adventitious roots into the soil. When these branches are seperated from the mother plant and live as independent plant, these branches are called stolon. eg Strawberry, Vallisneria
Sucker are sub aerial stem develop from underground part of stem. It arise by axillary bud of underground part of stem. It grows obliquely upward and produce new shoots. eg Pineapple
