Suggest a possible reason for the following observations:
i) In the solid state, Pas behaves as an ionic species
ii) H2S is more acidic than water.
iii)Fluorine forms the largest number of interhalogen compounds amongst the halogens
Dear Student,
(i) In solid state, PCl5 exists as [PCl4]+[PCl6]-. Therefore, it behaves as ionic solid.
(ii) H2S is more acidic than H2O. This is due to the bigger size of S as compared to O. This makes S-H bond weaker than O-H bond and so, H+ can be easily donated. Also, due to the large size of S, it can accomodate negative charge much easily, therefore the SH- ion formed after the loss of H+ will be more stable than the OH- ion.
(iii) Flourine forms the largest number of interhalogen compounds due to its small size and high electronegativity. It helps the central atoms to attain a high coordination number.
