a. Asthma is a respiratory disease. Asthma is caused due to inflammation in the airways. During an asthma attack, the muscles surrounding the airways became tight and there is a decrease in the passage of air through it, this causes the airways of the lungs to swell and become narrow. The symptoms of asthma include- difficulty in breathing and wheezing due to bronchi and bronchioles inflammation. It also includes pain in the chest and coughing. There are certain substances that can trigger an asthma attack in patients which include pollens, dust, animal hair, etc.  
 
b. Chronic diseases are those which occur slowly increases gradually, and last for a longer period of time. They can be controlled but are difficult to cure. Since asthma lasts for a longer period of time, it is referred to as a chronic disease.
