The story 'Should Wizard Hit Mommy' touches upon certain underlying assumptions about gender roles. Jack was uncomfortable with the idea of women taking things for granted: it was expressed through his disapproval of Joanne's insistence on her presumed ending of the story being the right one! He felt caged in his marriage and was reluctant to help his wife paint the room even though she was pregnant. He was finding it difficult to accept the changing scenario in society that was questioning the patriarchal setup.
