Dear student,

Calcium nitrate and zinc nitrate can be distinguished using sodium hydroxide solution. When sodium hydroxide solution is added to calcium nitrate a white precipitate is formed which is insoluble in the presence of excess of sodium hydroxide. However when sodium hydroxide is added to zinc nitrate the white precipitate formed in soluble in excess of sodium hydroxide.

Add sodium hydroxide solution to each of the solutions. The solution in which a white precipitate soluble in excess of sodium hydroxide is Zinc nitrate  and the one which forms a white precipitate insoluble in excess of sodium hydroxide  is Calcium nitrate
