Pls tell question 8

Dear Student,

Please find below the solution for your asked query:

8(a). The solution used in the beakers are:
  • Beaker 1 — Hypotonic solution
  • Beaker 2 — Hypertonic solution
  • Beaker 3 — Isotonic solution
(b) In beaker 3 the concentration of water molecules and solutes is the same in the solution as well as inside the cell as it is an isotonic solution. So, the movement of water molecules across the cell membrane is restricted. Hence, the size of the potato cubes remains the same.

(c) The cell sap of root hairs helps in the absorption of water as it has a higher concentration of solute than the surrounding water.

(d) Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across the semi-permeable membrane from the region of a lower solute concentration to the region of a higher solute concentration.

(e) The cell membrane is a selectively permeable membrane i.e. it allows the movement of certain substances while the cell wall allows free movement of all the substances.

Hope this helps!

Regards
