The symbiotic association found between the fungi and the roots of some plants (like gymnosperms) is called Mycorrhizae. There are some fungi that can make a symbiotic association with the roots of higher plants and helps them, to obtain nutrients from the soil (by decomposing the organic matter). In return, the plant provides the fungi with food. So, in this way, the fungi act as the roots of the higher plants.
