3) "The Black Cat" is a short story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. It was first
published in the August 19, 1843, edition of The Saturday Evening Post. It is a study of
the psychology of guilt, often paired in analysis with Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart". In
both, a murderer carefully conceals his crime and believes himself unassailable, but
eventually breaks down and reveals himself; impelled by a nagging reminder of his
guilt. Read the story and then attempt thefollowing question:
Imagine you are the head jailer at the prison where the narrator is awaiting his
execution. You are about to retire, and you have to write descriptions of all your
inmates to give to the person taking overfromyou. Write a description ofthe narrator
from the Black Cat. Make sureyou:
a. Explain the crime he had committed and how he wasfound out.
b. Describe his personality in detail. You would have read various testimonies of his
friends and neighbours describing him before the murder. so make sure to include
how his personality may have changed over time and what might have caused this.
