Iron oxide is used with aluminium to join the two ends of the railway track. Aluminium which is a highly reactive metal displaces iron which is a metal of lower reactivity from iron oxide with the production of the high amount of the heat as the displacement reactions are highly exothermic to join the railway tracks.

- The track is made of iron.
- Iron is in the middle of the activity series; hence, is moderately reactive which can easily be displaced by a highly reactive metal from iron oxide.
- It is easier to obtain a metal from its oxide than its sulphides and carbonates.
