Dear student,

Iron oxide is used with aluminium to join the two ends of the railway track. Aluminium which is a highly reactive metal displaces iron which is a metal of lower reactivity from iron oxide with the production of the high amount of the heat as the displacement reactions are highly exothermic to join the railway tracks.

Iron oxide (Fe2O3) with aluminium is used to join railway tracks because-
  • The track is made of iron.
  • Iron is in the middle of the activity series; hence, is moderately reactive which can easily be displaced by a highly reactive metal from iron oxide.
  • It is easier to obtain a metal from its oxide than its sulphides and carbonates.
