Human beings are considered as mammals because they are warm blooded animals having mammary glands and can give birth to their young ones.

The features of class Mammalia that enabled it to make to the top of evolutionary chart are:

• Internal fertilisation
• Viviparity i.e. embryo development inside mother's body to ensure protection of the embryo
• Parental care after child birth
• Better developed nervous system and blood vascular system etc.
• Presence of homeothermic regulation of temperature.

Humans possess all these characteristics hence they are considered as mammals.
 
Echidna and Platypus are egg-laying mammals.
