The women of Laputa had an abundance of vivacity. They would condemn their husbands and become exceedingly fond of strangers leading to a situation where a considerable number from the continent below were always present. They would be present at court, either upon affairs of the several towns or corporations, they were much despised because they wanted the same endowments. Among these the ladies would choose their gallants. The problem was that they acted with too much ease and security as the husband was always so rapt in speculation that the mistress and her lover could proceed with developing their intimacy right in front of him. There was only a need of paper and implements and he would be oblivious to what was happening. The wives and daughters lamented their confinement to the island although it was quite a beautiful spot of ground where one could live in plenitude and magnificence, doing as they pleased. The women longed to see the world and took diversions of the metropolis which they were not allowed to do without a particular license from the king. This was not easy to be obtained because the people of quality had found out through frequent experience that it was hard to persuade women to return from below. Gulliver was told of a great court lady who had several children, she was married to the prime minister who was the richest subject in the kingdom, a very graceful person and extremely fond of her living in the finest palace of the island But the lady went down to Lagado on the pretence of health and hid herself there for several months. It was not until the king sent a warrant to search for her that she was found in an obscure eating house in rags having pawned her clothes to maintain an old deformed footman who beat her every day and in whose company she was taken much against her will. The kindness and lack of reproach with which her husband took her back was to no avail because she contrived again to steal down with all her jewels to the same gallant and had not been heard of since then.
