Dear Student,

Dr Sadao was born in a conservative or traditional household. His father valued patriotism over all other virtues. Dr Sadao married Hana only after she confirmed that she was Japanese. It shows that he had imbibed the patriotic qualities of his father. He was also a doctor. His professional ethics mandated him to operate on the white man. He fulfilled his responsibility as a doctor by treating him. After treating him, he informed the general about his presence. In this way, he fulfilled both his duties as a citizen and doctor. There was no conflict in his mind with regards to what he should have done. However, when the general did not send anyone, Dr Sadao was caught in a dilemma as to what should he do next. He could not decide whether he should let him go for the sake of humanity or hand him over to the army. Eventually, the human spirit and the feeling of compassion that Dr Sadao had triumphed over his patriotic self. He let the man escape to an unguarded island and helped to save his life.  Thus his conflict was more of a conflict between a patriot and human being.

Regards,
