Plzz answer me all these give reasons with appropriate answer
Give reasons for the following:
l. NH3 gas a covalent compound does not conduct electricity but its aq. soln. NH40H is a weak
electrolyte.
2. MgCl2 is soluble in water but insoluble in acetone, while methane is insoluble in water, but soluble in acetone.
3. Iron displaces copper from a solution of a copper salt. The reaction is deemed as a redox reaction
A non-metallic atom [at. no. 9] forms a molecule of the same, containing a single covalent bond.
In the formation of MgO the magnesium atom [at no. 12] loses two electrons from its valence shell.
Dear student,
a)Anything to conduct electricity requires ions. Ammonia is a gas which does not contain ions and hence does not conduct electricity whereas the aqueous solution of ammonia dissociates to form NH4+ and OH- ions which act as weak electrolyte and conducts electricity.
b)MgCl2 is a polar compound like water and produces ions also, so it is soluble in water but is insoluble in non-polar acetone.Methane is non-polar so dissolves in non-polar acetone but not in polar water.
c)In the reaction, copper ions become copper metal and iron metal from iron(II) ions. Copper ions gain electrons to form a copper atom. These electrons come from the reaction when iron atoms lose electrons to form Fe+2.So, electrons are transferred from iron to copper. Hence it is a redox reaction. The reactions are as follows:
