'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?' is a science fiction novel by the American writer Philip K. Dick. It was published in the year 1968 and has gone on to amass a cult readership with the lovers of the science fiction genre. This is also the book on which the hugely popular sci-fi movie 'Blade Runner' is based, released in 1982. The novel is set in a post-apocalyptic future where the planet Earth and its inhabitants have been destroyed by a nuclear war termed Wold War Terminus. In this situation, most animals have become extinct or endangered due to radiation poisoning and to own an animal becomes a status symbol due to its rare occurrence. Humans beings have lost their connection with animals, the bonds they used to share and this also serves as the subject of exploration. The plot follows RIck Deckard, a bounty hunter who is faced with 'retiring' six escaped Nexus-6 brain model androids who want to reclaim their living rights and another plot follows John Isidore, a man of below average IQ who aids the fugitive androids. The novel explores the profound questions of what it means to be human and does humanity really come from being human. It is a take on human beings by showing its machine other and the dangers of human beings turning into machines due to their avowed disinterest in matters of empathy.
