Prove experimentally with the help of diagram that hydrogen gas is evolved when metals react with dilute acids.

This is the experimental set up to produce H2 gas:

In a Woulf's Bottle, fitted with Thistle funnel and delivery tube, take some granulated Zinc. Pour dil. H2SO4 over the granulated Zinc through Thistle funnel. Dilute H2SO4 reacts with Zinc to liberate H2 gas.Collect the liberated H2 gas in an inverted tube placed in shelf containing water as shown in the figure.
The produced gas is H2 can be proved by keeping the test tube with gas in contact of candle or a burning flame. Burning of gas with pop sound confirms the gas is H2
The chemical equation is as follows:

dil. H2SO4 + Zn ― > ZnSO4 + H2 (gas)

Suppose let us take a metal, magnesium, and put it in a dilute hydrochloric acid. You will observe that there is formation of gas bubbles. Collect these gas bubbles in a test tube and keep it under a candle or a burning flame. You will see that the gas burns in air producing 'POP' sound. hence, the gas evolved is hydrogen. The reaction is as follows:

Mg +2HCl = MgCl2+ H2
