A census is the procedure of systematically recording information about the members of a given population. It is done periodically to determine the population and other demographic details of a certain area.
In India, census is conducted once in 10 years.The first census was taken in 1881.

For this reason international documents refer to censuses of population and housing. Normally the census response is made by a household, indicating details of individuals resident there.
