Q1)Why do the houses in Rajasthan have thick walls and flat roofs?

Q2)Why is it that the houses in the Tarai region ,goa and Mangalore have sloping roofs?

Q3)Why houses in Assam are built on slits?

Q4) Why most of the worlds deserts are located in the western margins of continents in the subtropics?

  1. Houses in Rajasthan have thick walls to protect against the extreme heat and harsh cold of the desert climate. They also have flat roofs in order to collect rainwater as rainfall is scanty in this part of the country.
  2. The houses in tarai region and Goa and Mangalore have sloping roofs because:

Bulk of rainfall happens due to cyclones and depressions in this region.

  3. Houses in Assam are built on stilts because Assam recieves abundant rainfall ,due to which there are chance of floods . In case of floods , water might get into the houses if the houses are built on ground level so in order to avoid flooding of house , house are built on stilt as stilts are above the ground level , they prevent the houses from being flooded.
  4. The world's desert are located in the western margin of continents in the subtropics because:

  • The deserts lie in the belt of the trade winds which blow from northeast in the northern hemisphere and southeast in the southern hemisphere. Therefore, the general direction of the trade winds is from the east to west. These winds shed their moisture on the eastern margins of the continents and by the time they reach the west they have lost their moisture.
  • These deserts fall on the leeward side of the mountains and hence, get less rainfall.
