Q1 why is gravitational potential energy negative?

Q 2 does gravity have any effect on inertial mass??

Q 3 why there is no atmosphere on the surface of the moon??

In addition to the first answer.

Yes, the gravitational potential energy of the sun-planet system is negative. The primary reason is that gravitational force is always an attractive force, and the gravitational potential energy of any system is at the maximum zero, and this is possible only when the objects are at infinite distances from each other.

ANS 1: Gravitational potential energy is the work done in bringing a body of mass 'm' from infinity to a point which is at a distance 'r' away from it. Gravitational potential energy is negative since it is opposing with respect to the body.

ANS 2: Inertial mass is the ratio of force to uniform acceleration produced. Thus it is independent of the effect of gravity.

ANS 3: The escape velocity of the moon is very small. Since the particles are able to escape the gravitational pull of the moon, there is no atmosphere
