Such questions where you have to write a report or synopsis are made to assess learning outcomes and should be tried answering on your own. However, here are a few points that will help you in framing your answer:
- Arts refer to everything from paintings, architecture, literature, music, dance, languages to the cinema etc. In ancient India, most of the arts were derived from Vedic influences.
- After the beginning of modern Hinduism and other religions like Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism, arts, music languages etc related to them flourished under the patronage of kings and emperors. Appearing of Islam spawned a completely new era of Indian architecture and art.
- Lastly, the beginning of the British colonial rule had a great impact on Indian art. They brought their own Gothic and Roman influences and fused them with the Indian style.
- As a whole, the European advent was also greatly marked by a relative insensitivity to native art traditions. The former Indian patrons of art became less wealthy and influential, and Western art became more noticeable as the British set up schools of art in major cities, such as the Bombay Art Society in 1888.
- During British Imperialism, painting in India took on several western characteristics during the 18th and 19th centuries. Raja Ravi Varma was amongst the first Indian painters to adopt Western manners to illustrate Indian themes and traditions.
