Dear Student,
  1. Sophie waited for Danny Casey for a while, sitting on a bench beneath a solitary tree. She then began doubting his arrival. It made her sad to think that she would not be able to prove people wrong in doubting her. The burden of sitting there, waiting, and knowing that he would not come, was hard to carry.
  2. Gandhi refused to take help from C.F. Andrews because , he wanted people of India and the fellow peasants to be self-reliant. C.F. Andrews, although an ardent follower of Gandhi, was refused because he was an Englishman. The battle of independent India had to be won through the combined efforts of fellow Indians without the help of any foreigner.
  3. The statement is an example of hyperbole used to emphasise the plight of the people because of the fact that the hundredth tiger could not be found despite every effort. Milking a ferocious animal like a tiger is an impossible task for any human, as the beast was bound to kill anyone who dared to do anything like that. However, in this case finding a live tiger for the Maharaja, to kill seemed a far more difficult task than milking one.
  4. In the first two stanzas, the poet describes the slum children and their black future. Later in the poem, the mood and tone changes. The tone changes to that of determination, encouragement and hope that if these children are given the freedom to create their own world and the opportunities to prove themselves, their lives can change and their future can be revived.
