Question 8

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

BOD (Biological oxygen demand) is the amount of oxygen required by bacteria to oxidise all the organic matter present in the effluent. Higher the organic content, higher would be the BOD and similarly lower the organic content lower would be the BOD. During the secondary treatment, vigorous growth of bacteria takes place which feeds upon the organic matter leading to decrease of organic matter and hence decrease of BOD.

Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from waste water, primarily from household sewage. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove these contaminants and produce environmentally safe treated wastewater (or treated effluent). A by-product of sewage treatment is usually a semi-solid waste or slurry, called sewage sludge, that has to undergo further treatment before being suitable for disposal or land application.
