Question) Find the potential difference between points X and Y of the circuit shown in the figure. Given that C 1 = 2 ? F ,   C 2 = 3 ? F ,   C 3 = 4 ? F ,   C 4 = 5 ? F   a n d   E = 5 V .

 Dear Student,

Assumptions :  mentioned capacitors are in micro farad.

We have to find Vx -Vy = Vx  -VA+VA-Vy

As  point 'A'  is at higher potential therefore

 Vx  -VA+VA-Vy = -VC1+ VC3

Now we have to find VC1 and VC3

Applying KVL in loop 1 and loop 2

In loop 1let q be charge on C1 and C2 thenqC1+qC2 =Eq2+q3 =5 q=6μCtherefore voltage across C1 =VC1= qC1 =3 VSimilarly applyin KVL in loop 2 givesq' =1009μC   (q' =charge on capacitor C3 and C4)therefore VC3 =259 Vhence -VC1 +VC3 =-3 +259 =-29V =Vx -Vy
