Question no. 12

Dear student
a)The yellowish white powder of calcium which is used in disinfecting drinking water is bleaching powder. It is chemically known as Calcium oxychloride, and is represented by the chemical formula CaOCl2 . It is produced by the action of Chlorine (which is obtained by the electrolysis of aqueous solution of NaCl) on Dry Slaked lime [Ca(OH)2 ].

Reaction Involved:

Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 → CaOCl2 + H2O
b)
The gas produced on reaction of X with NaOH gives a pop sound indicates it is hydrogen gas.

The metal/element used in galvanisation Zn and Zn releases hydrogen gas on reaction with NaOH. so, X is Zn

Zinc will react with Sodium Hydroxide to from Sodium Zincate. In this reaction Zinc will not displace sodium from sodium hydroxide, but will displace Hydrogen as shown below:

Zn reacts with HCl to form ZnCl2 and release Hydrogen gas.   Zn + 2HCl  ZnCl2  + H2
