Rails and roads are compementary to each other. Explain?

The given statement is true and perhaps justified through the statements below : 
(i) Road transport is more appropriate for brief distances, whereas rail transport is more appropriate for long distances. 
(ii) Road transport is economical in the transportation of less no. of persons and a comparatively smaller amount of goods over short distances, whereas rail transport is more suitable for a much larger no. of people and heavy goods. 
(iii) it's beneficial for perishable goods to be carried by roads during a short period of time, whereas nonperishable and heavy goods are transported by railways for extended distances. 
(iv) Road transport increases the efficiency of railways. 
(v) Road transport links the underdeveloped areas with railway stations. 
(vi) The shortage of railways is counterbalanced by road transport.
