READ THE EXCERPT GIVEN BELOW AND ANSWER

It was raining, when she peered around, she saw a tumbledown old cabin in her neighbourhood which showed no sign of light or fire. She thought of the widow who resided in the cottage. Knowing that she was alone and ill, Jenny thought of checking on her. She went to her house and called out, ?Hey, neighbour!? After repeated knocking, when she heard no answer from anyone, she said, ?how sound she sleeps, that it requires so much to wake her!? Finally, she entered the house to find the woman motionless and cold on the mattress. The house was in an awful state with water dripping from the ceiling.

QUESTION:

?WHY IS THE SPEAKER WAKING THE WOMEN MENTIONED IN THE ABOVE LINES?

Dear Student,
You have not mentioned the name of the chapter, hence I will not be able to provide you with an accurate answer.
I request you to repost the question with the details to provide some clarity

However, from the above text what I understand is:
The speaker is trying to wake the widow as it started to rain and the widow was living alone.  This shows that the speaker is a friendly and caring neighbour.
