Refractive indexes of kerosene, turpentine, and water are 1.44, 1.47 and 1.33 respectively. Through which of these media speed of light is (i) maximum and (ii) minimum.  Explain.

Dear Student,
Refractive index of a medium is defined as the ratio of speed of light in vacuum to that in the medium. Thus, greater the refractive index of a medium, smaller is the speed in the medium.
(i) Water has the minimum refractive index among the three so speed of light is maximum in water.
(ii) Turpentine has the maximum refractive index among the three so speed of light is minimum in turpentine.
