First there was a cork placed on the water, which is placed to observed the vibration of water level. Then, when someone throws a stone on it, waves will produced on the surface of water. And we know transverse waves produced on water surface. By definition of transverse wave, we know that the particle movement is perpendicular to the wave motion.
So, when you throw a stone on water, ripple produced at the point where the stone hits. And with time the ripples will propagate outward, that means towards the wall of the tub. So, wave motion is along the horizontal direction. And then the movement of water particles is along vertical direction.
So, the cork will move/vibrate along vertical direction.
