Plasmids − May have 1 − 2 copy number to 15 − 100 copy number per cell]....................... i did ot get it.... pls anyone pls explain............

Plasmids are the extrachromosomal DNA present in some prokaryotes like bacteria etc. Bacteriophages are the viruses which infect bacteria.  These are commonly used as clonning vectors in genetic engeneering (vehicles to carry desired genes into host organisms) due to following properties:

  • Both of these have the ability to replicate within the bacterial cells independent of the chromosomal DNA i.e they do not need their attachment with the host chromosomal DNA to replicate their DNA. As they enter into host cell, they replicate on their own.
  • Bacteriophages − Have high copy number (of genome) within the bacterial cell and Plasmids − May have 1 − 2 copy number to 15 − 100 copy number per cell. Copy number of the DNA or genome means the number of the DNA copies present or produced in the host cell. Thus, bacteriophage DNA replicates many times in the host cell and produces many copies of its DNA in the host cell while as plasmid produces only 1 to 100 copies of itself in the host cell.
