Why are oceans least productive?

rn

  • Nutrients like phosphorus, nitrogen, trace elements etc are highly lacking in the ocean water. Only the shore areas get the nutrients due to erosion. Thus a huge stretch of mid sea remains very less productive.
  • The phytoplanktons usually grow on the upper surface of sea water.  They are the main producers of ocean. But as all the organisms sink at the bottom after death, these planktons hardly get any nutrients to grow. It results in vast unproductive areas in open ocean.
  • The part of ocean that is near Antarctica remains frozen and without sunlight half of the year which also highly reduces the growth of organisms.

By considering all the above reasons it is said that oceans are least productive.
