In India, during 1999-2000 to 2004-05, approximately 47 million work opportunities were generated and during 1993-94 to 1999-00, 24 million work opportunities were created. As a result, employment growth increased from 1.25% p.a. to 2.62 % p.a. But, since the labour force has increased at a faster rate of 2.84% than the workforce, unemployment rate has also risen.

Also, as per the report by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, unemployment rate in India was 4.90 percent in 2013.Unemployment Rate in India averaged 7.32 percent from 1983 until 2013, reaching an all time high of 9.40 percent in 2009.
