Show that value of poisson's ratio lies -1 and o.5

Dear Student,

Experiments have shown that the theoretical  value of Poisson's Ratio for all substances lies in between -1 and +0.5, but practical value of Poisson's Ratio lies between 0 and 0.5.
We know the relationship E = 3K(1-2n), where E is young's modulus of elasticity, K is bulk modulus of elasticity and n is Poisson's ratio.
If value of Poisson's ratio is more than half, implies that value of young's modulus is negative which is not possible.
So value of Poisson's ratio is always less than 0.5 and always greater than -1

Poisson's ratio is the ratio of transverse contraction strain to longitudinal extension strain in the direction of stretching force. Tensile deformation is considered positive and compressive deformation is considered negative. The definition of Poisson's ratio contains a minus sign so that normal materials have a positive ratio.
