sir can u answer my doubt sir try to answer this by today as i have my test tomorrow
sir what is density and solids have less density i guess so but ice floats on water.why is that?

Dear Student,

The density of a substance is defined as the mass per unit volume of the substance.We can also say that it is the amount of matter in unit volume of a substance.

Density= Mass/Volume.
SI Unit is kg/m 3

Higher the mass per unit volume more will be the density of the substance. In case of solid, molecules are closely packed and have definite volume which leads to higher density as compared to gases and liquid.

But density of water is higher as compared to ice so ice floats on the surface of the water.

Reason : In ice, each water molecule is surrounded by the four other water molecules with their oxygen atom occupying the corner of the tetrahedron. There are four hydrogen atoms attached to an oxygen atom; two of the hydrogen atoms are bonded by the covalent bond while another two by the hydrogen bond. This gives a huge 3D structure having large vacant spaces.Due to this the volume of ice is more than water and thus density is less than water.
