sir it's a value based ques asked in 1st pre-board plz ans it it is of 5 marks..

a) On seeing the bad state of roads in your locality, u have recommended to the Municipal Corporation to use polyblend..

i) What is polyblend ? Point out its raw material..

ii) How will it be advantageous ?

iii) What are e-wastes ? Explain the method of their disposal..

Polyblend is a mechanical mixture of two or more polymers. Its raw material is plastic waste. It is used in the construction of roads. The durability of the roads constructed using polyblend is much more compared with ordinary roads. The binding property of plastic makes the road last longer besides giving added strength to withstand more loads. While a normal 'highway quality' road lasts four to five years it is claimed that plastic-bitumen roads can last up to 10 years. So, it will result in lesser road repairs. horn

For your next question of e-wastes, please refer to your friend's answer given above.

polyblend is a fine powder of recycled modified plastic.

its raw material is plastic.

its mixture with Bitumen is used tolay roads

it enhances bitumen's water repellant property and increase the life of roads by a factor of three

irreperable computers and other electronic devices are known as e-waste

"E-waste" is a popular, informal name for electronic products nearing the end of their "useful life. "E-wastes are considered dangerous, as certain components of some electronic products contain materials that are hazardous, depending on their condition and density. The hazardous content of these materials pose a threat to human health and environment. Discarded computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, fax machines, electric lamps, cell phones, audio equipment and batteries if improperly disposed can leach lead and other substances into soil and groundwater.

It is estimated that 75% of electronic items are stored due to uncertainty of how to manage it. These electronic junks lie unattended in houses, offices, warehouses etc. and normally mixed with household wastes, which are finally disposed off at landfills. This necessitates implementable management measures.

In industries management of e-waste should begin at the point of generation. This can be done by waste minimization techniques and by sustainable product design. Waste minimization in industries involves adopting:

  • inventory management,
  • production-process modification,
  • volume reduction,
  • recovery and reuse.
