Dear Student,

In the year 1916, Henry Fayol, a french mining engineer and practitioner introduced 14 principles of management which were popularly known as 'Fayol's principles of management'. Even today, after a century has passed since the development, some principles of management can still be noticed. Let us consider Big Bazaar only, the following generic principles can be noticed:

1.  Division of Work - We can see groups of employees involved in the same work. For example, a group of persons is given the responsibility of handling the cash counter and taking the order. Another group remain in the kitchen and do the cooking. And another group which transfers the cooked food from the kitchen to the cash counter for delivery purpose. This ensures that every individual is given his assigned task and there exists division of work in the organisation.

2.  Unity of Command - Each employee was answerable to their branch supervisor which authenticated that this principle was present in the organisation.

3.  Espirit de corps - I
t can be noticed that there is unity and team spirit among the employees for efficient and effective delivery of order. The solidarity and enthusiasm can also be observed.

4.  Equity - The employees can be from different communities, religion, having different mother tongue, yet all were working together in the same organisation and they were working as a team to accomplish the goals of the business. This will ensure equity in the organisation.

5. Remuneration of employees - Big Bazaar rewards employees with fair compensation as per market rates so that employees can stay motivated while doing their jobs. It also allows employees with various incentive schemes based oh their performance and other benefits such as medical insurance etc.

6. Centralisation and Decentralisation -   Big Bazaar, being a huge sized company is having its dealings in various commodities. All its operations cannot be managed by a single person. Therefore, It follows a balanced policy of centralisation and decentralisation in which top level management only takes most significant decisions, and the small decisions can be taken by lower level of management and its employees,

7.  Discipline -  Big Bazaar's employees follow complete discipline to the rules and regulation prevailing in the franchisee. The standards of uniform and service are always maintained in each unit.

8.  Subordination of Individual interest to general interest -  It can be observed in any Big Bazaar unit, that each employee is working whole heartedly towards customer service and satisfaction rather than working towards his own interest. In any conflict, the interest of the organisation prevails.

9. Order -  This principles says ' People and materials must be in suitable places at appropriate time for maximum efficiency' . In Big Bazaar, all people have definite jobs assigned and all materials are managed with a well managed procurement chain. This ensures maximum efficiency in the organisation.

10.  Stability of personnel - The employee turnover of Big Bazaar is minimised by following suitable human resource policies, that is, paying fair compensation, proper training for respective jobs, good working environment etc.
