Q. (b) Explain the variation of first ionization energy in F, O, N and C.

Dear student,
First ionisation energy varies as: C<O<N<F.
Ionisation energy increases on going from left to right in a period due to increase in effective nuclear charge and decrease in radii. However, ionisation energy of N is greater than O because p-subshell in N is exactly half filled & has greater stability.Hence it is difficult to remove an electron from N than from O(O has neither completely filled nor half filled p-subshell). F has higher ionisation energy than both N & O because of increased nuclear charge.
