Q. Why did Mr Hiram B Otis buy Canterville Chase despite knowing that it was a haunted house?

Dear Student,

Lord Canterville himself told Mr. Otis that Canterville Chase was haunted, and everybody else testified to it. Yet, Mr. Otis was convinced about buying the mansion because he, first of all, firmly didn’t believe in ghosts. Ghosts, according to him, were against the law of nature. Also, he had great pride and belief in the spirit of his country that even if a ghost appeared, being his country’s representative, he knew he wouldn’t be scared of it and would be able to handle anything that may happen.

The American Minister Hiram B Otis liked the villa very much and he decided to buy it. The owner, Lord Canterville. was a very honest person. He did not want to cheat Mr Otis. So. he told Mr Otls what he knew about the house. Lord Canterville said that his grandaunt, the Duchess of Bolton, had a strange experience in the house of encountering the ghost Some villagers had also seen a ghostin the villa But Mr Otis was not discouraged by such tales Mr Otis said that he did not believe in ghosts. So the deal was done by him. He became the new master of the house called 'Canterville Chase'
