Q. Why Hydrogen gas is not evolved when most of the metals react with nitric acid?

Dear Student

Hydrogen produced during the reaction of metal with nitric acid is oxidized to water due to the strong oxidizing power of HNO3 and instead of hydrogen, nitric oxides (NO or NOor N2O) are evolved.

Example: 4Fe + 10HNO3  4Fe(NO3)2 + N2O + 5H2O

Because nitric acid is a oxidising agent and it reacts with the evolved hydrogen to form its oxides like N2O,NO2,NO and so doesn't evolve hydrogen gas on reaction. Hope it helps...Thumbs-up plz!!!
