Q22. Write a balanced chemical equation for each of the following reactions and also classify them.

             (a) Lead acetate solution is treated with dilute hydrochloric acid to form lead chloride and acetic acid solution.

             (b) A piece of sodium metal is added to absolute ethanol to form sodium ethoxide and hydrogen gas.
             (c) Iron (III) oxide on heating with carbon monoxide gas reacts to form solid iron and liberates carbon dioxide gas

             (d) Hydrogen sulphide gas reacts with oxygen gas to form solid sulphur and liquid water.

Q23. What happens when iron nail is put inside copper sulphate solution? Write the reactions with observations.

The solution is as follows:

(a) (CH3COO)2Pb (aq) + 2 HCl (aq) PbCl2(s) + 2 HCOOH(aq)

Double Displacement reaction

(b)  2 Na(s) + 2 C2H5OH (aq) 2 C2H5ONa (aq) + H2(g)

Displacement reaction

(c) Fe2O3(s) + CO (g)  2 Fe(s) + CO2(g)

Displacement reaction

(d) 8 H2S(g) + 4 O2(g)  S8(s) + 8 H2O(l)

Displacement reaction

Answer 23:

Iron is more reactive than copper. It displaced Copper from its salt solution and form ferrous sulphate which is green in colour.

  Fe(s) + CuSO4(aq)  FeSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
